Deputies: DeBary man shoots girlfriend over photo with ex-boyfriend

A DeBary man shot his girlfriend Monday after becoming upset when he found a cellphone photo of the woman and her ex-boyfriend, Volusia County deputies said.

Deputies were still looking for the suspected shooter, Caleb Padgett, 21, Tuesday, and were working on possible leads that his mother would turn him in, authorities said.

Padgett shot his girlfriend of one month during an argument in the car at DeBary Memorial Park on Dirksen Road at 11:20 a.m., according to sheriff's detectives.

The woman suffered a gunshot wound to the upper right side of her body and the bullet went through her left bicep and through the driver's side door. She was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, investigators said.

According to a sheriff's office affidavit, Padgett faces charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and tampering with a victim. He also faces an armed robbery charge because deputies said he took the woman's cellphone and prevented her from calling 911.

Fight over old photo ends in shooting

Detectives learned Monday that the victim was texting Padgett from school and then decided to drive to his home.

When Padgett got into her car, he asked his girlfriend to let him view her cellphone, which she allowed. Padgett then found a photo of the woman and her-ex-boyfriend on the device and started arguing with her, detectives said.

Padgett brandished a handgun and pointed it several times at the woman, and she asked him to move it away because she was scared, the charging affidavit said.

Padgett then asked the woman to drive to her ex-boyfriend's home in Altamonte Springs, authorities said. She obliged, but Padgett soon changed his mind and asked the woman to drive to Gemini Springs State Park, detectives said.

On the way to the state park, the woman felt uncomfortable, so she stopped at DeBary Memorial Park. There Padgett started arguing with her again and waving the gun and pointing it a her while inside the car, the report said.

During the argument, the gun fired and hit the woman, detectives said.

The woman tried to call 911 but Padgett took her phone and prevented her from calling for help, investigators said.

The woman managed to get her phone and ran from the car to a nearby home to ask for help.

Padgett ran from the scene and a search on Monday failed to locate him, deputies said.

Deputies had previously responded to the woman's residence at 9:19 p.m. Sunday for a report of a threatening call. She told deputies that same night that a month ago Padgett had threatened to shoot her, but that she did not tell her parents or report it to police, investigators said.

Deputies were unable to take action based on the information they received, authorities said.
