SALEM: A meeting convened to discuss the programmes to be organized as part of chief minister M K Stalin’s birthday celebrations [on March 1] ended up in a clash within the DMK cadre in the city on Tuesday.
The meeting was convened by district secretary and Salem north MLA R Rajendran.
At the meeting, Salem DMK councillor M Gunasekaran raised the issue of party’s district presidium president K R Murugan using unsavoury remarks against the ‘chozhia vellalar’ community while conversing with a party functionary. The audio of the conversation has gone viral on social media.
Other members at the meeting picked up arguments with Gunasekaran for raising the issue in the meeting, which meant to discuss the programmes for the chief minister’s birthday. Meanwhile, some members came in support of Gunasekaran. After heated arguments, cadres started throwing chairs at each other, which led to pandemonium.
Meanwhile, Gunasekaran walked out of the meeting hall with his supporters. “I requested Rajendran to take disciplinary action against Murugan after hearing the audio.”
Murugan’s phone remained switched off when TOI tried to contact him.
Rajendran said the audio was an old one. “They had spoken in September 2021. I don’t know why the councillor and his groups were making this an issue now.” TNN
