Twitter welcomes everyone to Twitter as it goes down

Not the best welcome, really.

Twitter is down again, but this time it's at least a little bit funny.

For many users, including us at Mashable, Twitter is display a message saying "Welcome to Twitter!" instead of, you know, tweets.

Some parts of the site are still working; for example, searching for the hashtag "#twitterdown(Opens in a new tab)" will net you some results.

Downdetector(Opens in a new tab), a site that tracks the status of popular websites and online services, indicates that something is truly amiss at Twitter, with numerous user reports that the site isn't working in the past hour. (Editor's note: Downdetector is owned by Mashable's parent company, Ziff Davis).

Notably, CEO Elon Musk recently fired a number of Twitter employees(Opens in a new tab). The most recent wave of layoffs came after several earlier waves which cut roughly 75 percent of Twitter's workforce (and a number of people leaving on their own), leaving what some employees have described as a skeleton crew which can hardly maintain even the most critical systems.
