The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Wednesday suspended the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) licence of the prominent public think-tank Centre for Policy Research, citing non-compliance of FCRA norms.

It is learnt that the FCRA licence of the think tank was suspended last week following prima-facie inputs regarding the violation of such funding norms.

The Centre for Policy Research is a non-profit organization focused on conducting research that improves policies and encourages lively public discussions about issues that affect the lives of people in India.

The FCRA license was under scrutiny after Income Tax surveys on CPR and Oxfam India in September 2022. Oxfam's FCRA licence was revoked in January 2022, after which the NGO filed a revision petition with the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Several NGOs and organisations are still waiting for their review and renewal applications to be processed, and some licenses have been revoked or have expired in the last six months, according to a senior government official.

Earlier this year, over 6,000 NGOs that had their licenses revoked had appealed to the Supreme Court for relief, but their pleas were rejected by the court.
