Nagpur: In two recent cases, city cops got breakthroughs in investigations in the most quirky manner. In the first case, a man rounded up by Kalamna police last week for harassing his father managed to extract some sympathy from the cops by turning informer in a case of plywood theft.
Based on a WhatsApp number shared by the man, who also apologized to the cops for harassing his father, the police team managed to nab a gang of burglars masterminded by Rajkumar Bante. They had broken into a godown at Vijay Nagar and stolen plywood, which was then kept at a place at Gulmohar Nagar.
In the other case, 22-year-old Chandrashekhar Yadav was caught by Kalamna police from a village in Chhindwada district of Madhya Pradesh for burglary after the cyber police team got a clue that he had recharged his cellphone from a shop at Ganeshpeth.
Yadav had committed a burglary at Surya Nagar in Kalamna a few days ago. Police tracked the burglar’s journey after he left the crime scene, using footage from 35 CCTVs from Kalamna to Ganeshpeth. The footage showed he had gone to a shop from where he had recharged his cellphone. Using this information, the cops were able to zero down upon his house in Madhya Pradesh.
Yadav, probably a first-time thief, was still carrying the house owner’s passport size photograph, ATM cards and also Aadhaar card, which he had neglected to discard. This helped cops conclusively link him to the theft.
In the first case, Bante and his gang had circulated a WhatsApp number, claiming to be in possession of good quality plywood which they wanted to sell. This WhatsApp number was shared by errant son with cops, while requesting them to show him some leniency in his father’s complaint. Based on the information, the cops managed to nab Bante for questioning. The cops also later recovered the stolen plywood.
In yet another case, detected by a team of senior inspector Vinod Patil of Kalamna police station, the police managed to nab notorious bike thief Mohd Arif alias Arif Bengali last week, and recover five stolen bikes from him.
Kalamna police also nabbed hardcore burglar Hitesh Dange and also rounded up five minors engaged by him for a burglary at Surya Nagar. Kalamna police have recently cracked nine cases, arrested five offenders and recovered material worth Rs7.77 lakh, under supervision of Zonal DCP Shravan Dutt.
