Stocks Open Lower as Investors Await Manufacturing Data

Investors worry robust economic data could prompt the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates elevated

Stocks traded lower to start the month, as investors awaited readouts on the health of the U.S. manufacturing sector.

The S&P 500 fell 0.3% in early trading Wednesday. The tech-focused Nasdaq Composite also dropped 0.3%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average ticked down 0.1%. The three U.S. indexes had closed February with monthly losses of between 1.1% and 4.2%.
