Kevin McCarthy sentenced to six years in shooting death of Willoughby roommate

Feb. 28—Kevin McCarthy has been sentenced to up to six years in prison for the 2022 shooting death of his roommate in a Willoughby apartment.

McCarthy, who earlier pleaded guilty, was sentenced recently by Lake County Common Pleas Court Judge John P. O'Donnell.

According to court documents, McCarthy was ordered to serve a prison term of 36 months in prison for reckless homicide with the term to be served at the Lorain Correctional Institution in Grafton with five days credit for time served.

McCarthy is to serve an additional term of three years as a mandatory prison term for the firearm specification with that sentence to be served prior to and consecutive to the above prison term.

According to a news release, about 10:15 p.m. April 14, 2022, Willoughby Police received a call from a male who said he had accidentally shot his roommate and that his roommate was dead inside the apartment.

Units arrived at the Willogrove Apartments, 37343 Grove Ave., and located the caller, 25-year-old McCarthy, outside the building. McCarthy was detained while additional officers responded to the apartment, the release stated.

Officers found 25-year-old Christian Kilburg dead in the apartment. He had been shot.

According to the release, McCarthy was originally charged with voluntary manslaughter.

According to court documents, on Jan. 18, McCarthy withdrew his original not guilty plea and plead guilty to reckless homicide with a firearms specification.
