HYDERABAD: A week after four-year-old Pradeep was mauled to death by stray dogs in Amberpet, another two cases of dog attacks on three children in the city have surfaced on Tuesday. Both the attacks happened in the last four days, but luckily the three children were rescued before things took a turn for the worse.
In the first incident, a six-year-old boy who had stepped out of his home to pick his paper plane from the road was chased and attacked by the strays in Green Hills in Nacharam. The incident happened on February 24 and the CCTV footage of the boy, Arshith, trying to escape the dogs soon went viral.
The video showed two stray dogs rushing towards him while Arshith instinctively runs away. He, however, fell to the ground after one of the dogs bit him on his back. Fortunately for him, soon his sister came to his rescue and fended off the dogs.
Taking to Twitter on Sunday, the boy's father Kishore, an IT employee, tagged municipal administration minister KT Rama Rao and sought help. Soon thereafter the GHMC's LB Nagar zone deployed a dog-catching unit and caught strays from the area.
"Had my daughter not reacted quickly, things would have been different," Kishore said while addressing the media. Arshith escaped with injuries on his legs from the fall while running away from the dogs and a bite on his back.
The other dog attack happened on February 26 in Borabanda in SR Nagar. In this case a stray dog attacked two children causing severe injuries.
The children, Aayan (8) and Fatima (5), were playing near their house when the stray dog suddenly turned on them, according to locals. People present in the area chased the dog away and rushed the two children to a local hospital. GHMC officials were informed about the incident by the residents and they deployed a dog-catching unit in the area.
Civic activists said that several complaints are pouring in from across the city, especially from areas where garbage is left unattended on roads.
"In the Old City, the issue of stray dogs is worse due to this issue especially in areas such as Mehdipatnam, Mallepally, Afzal Gunj, Red Hills, Agapura and Nampally court area. Wish officials paid more attention to these areas," said Mohammed Abid, a civic activist.
