2023 Jeep Renegade

The 2023 Renegade nets points above average for interior and exterior flair. It’s a 7 for styling. 

Enough vintage cues including round headlights, a boxy profile, and Wrangler-esque taillights tie it into Jeep’s past and present. The big greenhouse and blocky sides suggest a higher profile than most versions’ fairly short tires actually provide, but that’s a byproduct of its car-based underpinnings. 

Trailhawk models look the best with their all-terrain tires and slightly different bumpers and details. 

The busy dash is cheerful and fun, if not exactly convenient. Some buttons and switches can be tricky to locate at first glance, and there’s not a huge amount of small-item space.

Yes, this year all Renegade models come with an all-wheel-drive system that doesn’t require any driver intervention.

Trailhawk versions have drive modes for rocks, mud, and the like, plus a simulated low range that makes slow going easier here than in models such as the Subaru Forester. It’s not a genuine rock crawler, but it’s also a lot more tolerable in day-to-day driving. 

How fast is the Jeep Renegade?

The 1.3-liter turbo-4 is light on displacement but big on power, with 177 hp shifted to all four corners via a 9-speed automatic transmission. The turbo-4 itself is reasonably refined and offers decent grunt, though the automatic can trip its way through low gears. In-town driving can be less pleasant than it should be.

Well-weighted steering adds confidence. The firm suspension copes well with potholes, though the Renegade can be a bit choppy over expansion joints as a result of its short wheelbase. Trailhawk versions ride a little softer thanks to extra travel in their springs and more tire sidewall. 

About 18.5 cubic feet of cargo space awaits smaller suitcases behind the rear seatbacks, though that grows to 51 cubic feet with the seatbacks flopped forward. 

Interior materials are nice—as they ought to be for these prices.

The IIHS fails to grant the Renegade an award due to an “Acceptable” score in the front passenger-side small-overlap test, and its headlights don’t rate well either. 

All versions come standard with blind-spot monitors and lane-departure warnings. While  automatic emergency braking is standard on Latitude and Limited trims, it’s not available on the Trailhawk.

Latitude models come with an 8.4-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, automatic climate control, navigation, active safety tech, and 17-inch alloy wheels. That’s a good chunk of change, especially since you could buy a Subaru Crosstrek Limited with leather seats for slightly less.
