It wasn’t the best start.
Luis Severino’s spring debut got off to a rocky start in Monday night’s 8-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers.
Severino was greeted on the mound with Tiger bats ready to swing and the pitcher had given up three runs before getting three outs.
“Obviously not great results today. Hung that slider that [Eric] Haas really put a charge into on ‘em,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “Feel like his slider wasn’t great tonight. …I thought stuff wise he looked good. I thought his fastball was strong, playing at the top of the zone. And [he] flashed some good changeups tonight.”
The right-hander’s fastball clocked in at no lower than 95 MPH however his hanging slider, as Boone said, got sent 422 feet off the batter’s eye in center field. The two-time All-Star settled down after the shaky first frame, not allowing a hit in the second inning and allowing just a walk in the third.
Severino finished Monday’s outing throwing 45 pitches in 2+ IP, allowing three hits and four earned runs. He totaled just one strikeout and allowed one walk.
“Just being healthy, getting those innings, getting those pitches, and feeling really good after that,” Severino said when asked about his first spring outing. “I think that’s the main thing for me right now.”
MARTIAN KEEPS SHINING
After homering in Saturday’s opener against the Philadelphia Phillies, Jasson Dominguez continued to make an impression down in Florida. Dominguez replaced Harrison Bader, who started in center field, and went 1-1 with a walk. He scored both times on the base paths and also stole a base in the seventh inning.
The Martian’s lone hit came off a sinker he lined into center field from Tigers right-hander Ediwn Uceta.
JUDGE NOT AGAINST PITCH CLOCK
Yankees star Aaron Judge was absent from Monday’s matchup but made comments on the new pitch clock implemented for the first time. The MVP said the addition should be “a good thing for everybody,” according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch.
“When they brought the shot clock into basketball all those years ago, they had to learn to adjust,” Judge said. “You couldn’t just sit around and dribble and run motion for 5 minutes.”
WHAT’S NEXT?
Giancarlo Stanton, Anthony Rizzo and DJ LeMahieu are slated to make their Grapefruit League debuts when the Bronx Bombers take on the Washington Nationals on Wednesday, according to Hoch.
Boone said LeMahieu will play second base in his spring debut. The manager added that the three-time All-Star will get reps at first and third base this spring.
The Yankees play their next game against the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday.
