Jasper High School coding, robotics club sees competition success

The Jasper High School Coding and Robotics club has been getting their feet wet in local competitions.

The club earned first place medals at the Texas Computer Education Association Region 5 Robotics Contest at Memorial High School in Port Arthur, Jan. 19, according to a news release from Jasper High School.

The group, named "Team Med," is comprised of students Caden Bootie, Fernando Ortiz and Hayden Harkins, led by sponsors Shonda Brown and Carol McFarland.

The team traveled to the First Baptist Church in Hemphill on Jan. 31 to participate in the Patricia Huffman Smith National Aeronautics and Space Administration Museum "Remembering Columbia" robotics competition.

"Astronauts and engineers from NASA and Boeing were mentors to the students during the competition," the news release states. "Teams had five hours to build a space robot that could provide a life-sustaining service to a community on Mars, create a presentation and present it to the judges."

While the Jasper team did not win the competition, the students were interviewed by KTRE 9 News and were able to meet and get autographs from former and current NASA astronauts.
