AMARAVATI: Giving relief to the poor handloom artisans of Kothuru village, Crafts Council of Andhra Pradesh (CCAP) conducted a mega health camp on Sunday.
Expert medical professionals from LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) and reputed physicians from other top corporate hospitals visited the village to take up the screening of health issues of the global famed artisans of Kothuru village.
CCAP secretary Sujatha and member Ranjana said that they have also distributed medicines to all the required people.
They said that gynecologist Leela, general physician Sukanya, orthopedic surgeons and other experts from LVPEI took up the tests.
“We found many of the local artisans, particularly women, are anemic and lack health awareness during our first visit to the village last month. We have decided to provide the healthcare before extending the marketing facilities to them,” said Sajatha.
The handloom artisans expressed happiness about CCAP’s focus on their health issues.
They said that CCAP representatives told them that they could produce better handloom clothes only when they were healthy.
The CCAP members promised the artisans to conduct periodical health checkups to provide better healthcare.
They assured that they would also devise a strategy to promote the tie-and die clothes weaved by the local artisans.
Kothuru near Macherla is the only village in Andhra Pradesh to produce tie-and-die mode handlooms.
