HYDERABAD: Telangana continues to experience dry spell for the second successive month. As per data, negligible rainfall occurred, leading to 98% deficit in February. As per Telangana State Development and Planning Society (TSDPS) data, normal rainfall in the state is 4.6 mm in February, but only 0.1 mm was recorded.
January too was very dry as only 0.7 mm rainfall occurred as against a normal rainfall of 6.8 mm. Owing to this, the overall deficit in winter rains is 98% as just 0.8 mm rain occurred as against normal rainfall of 11.5 mm. In sharp comparison, 2022 saw 35.9 mm rainfall in the two months.
A crucial reason, experts cited for poor rains, was overall lack of rain from the southern peninsular where 59% deficit was seen as of February 26. "Overall, India has seen a rise in temperatures as there have been very few western disturbances which bring in snowfall and rains to all of north and central India. But since they are occurring very infrequently, there is higher heat over Telangana," said an official from IMD.
Owing to this, days have been hotter in Telangana with maximum temperatures above 32 degrees Celsius in almost all districts but at the same time, the minimum temperatures have fallen to as low as 12.6 degrees Celsius too.
"With no cloud cover, the days are warming up but at nights, the temperatures are low in line with the routine February temperatures," said officials.
On Sunday, the lowest recorded temperature in the state was 12.6 degrees in Rangareddy followed by Vikarabad with 12.9 degrees, while highest temperatures recorded were at Bhadrachalam with 37 degrees and 36.9 degrees in Nizamabad.
