A Domestic Agenda for the House Select China Committee

The new House select committee on China faces an enormous task that will require grappling with fundamental questions of national security, international order and geopolitical strategy. In addition to examining China and its place in the world, the committee will also have to understand the U.S. and its own global standing. That means wrestling with American domestic policy too.

To understand why, consider the panel’s full, formal name: the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party. The key word is “competition.” The U.S. can’t know how to beat China without understanding its own assets and liabilities.
