Jack Kennedy is still "50-50" to make next month's Cheltenham Festival with trainer Gordon Elliott still unsure of what riders he will have available to him at the Cotswolds.
Kennedy faces a race against time as he continues his rehabilitation from a broken leg suffered in early January but Elliott should know his fate by the end of the week.
"I was with Jack on Saturday night. He went back into hospital and got good news off Paddy Kenny (doctor). He’s in Santry (Sports Surgery Clinic) all this week and is back to Paddy Kenny on Friday. He’ll know on Friday whether it’s yes or no," Elliott said this morning.
"He’s making good progress, but he’s still 50-50. He’d have to be back riding out next week, he'll have to have a week riding out and if we got him riding the weekend before, a couple of rides, and then on to Cheltenham.
“I’m 100 per cent behind him. If he’s back, he rides everything. He’s first jockey and if he’s not, we’ll have Davy (Russell) and Jordan (Gainford) and Sam (Ewing) and the whole team."
Russell made a sensational retirement U-turn in the wake of Kennedy's injury but the 43-year-old has had just two rides since a fall at the Dublin Racing Festival at the start of this month and his fitness is also up in the air.
While lauding his Cheltenham nous, Elliott also revealed that he hasn't spoken to the Cork rider about his status in recent weeks and he confirmed his full confidence in emerging rider Jordan Gainford if he is thrust into the role of first jockey in a fortnight's time.
"You never know with Davy, your guess is as good as mine," Elliott said. "I haven’t spoken to Davy for the last two weeks. If Jack’s not back, the wealth of experience Davy has to go around Cheltenham is unbelievable.
"We've Jordan and Sam (Ewing) and all the boys as well but it's a lot of pressure for a young lad to be going there for Jordan and them but they're good lads and if there is any issue with Jack and Davy not there, I'll back Jordan 100pc, he'll ride them all."
