PATNA: Three teachers’ and two graduates’ constituencies of the Bihar legislative council will go to polls on March 31.
Counting of votes will take place on April 5.
The
Election Commission on Monday announced schedule for the biennial polls to two teachers’ constituencies (Gaya and Koshi) and two graduates’ constituencies (Saran and Gaya) and by-poll to one (Saran) teachers’ constituency.
As per the commission’s press note, the elections in Gaya and Koshi teachers’ constituencies and Saran and Gaya graduates’ constituencies are necessitated as their respective sitting members are scheduled to retire on May 8 this year.
Those retiring are Sanjeeva Shyam Singh (Gaya teachers’), Sanjeev Kumar Singh (Koshi teachers), Awadhesh Narain Singh (Gaya graduates’) and Virendra Narayan Yadav (Saran Graduates’).
The by-poll in the Saran teachers’ constituency was necessitated due to the untimely death of sitting MLC Kedar Nath Pandey on October 24 last year.
Nomination in all five constituencies will begin soon after issuance of a formal notification for the election on March 6, while March 13 is the last date for making nominations.
“Scrutiny of nominations will be held on March 14 while March 16 is the last date for withdrawal of candidature. All processes of election will be completed before April 11,” the commission said on Monday.
The state legislative council has a total 75 seats.
Of them, 27 members are elected from Vidhan Sabha constituency, 24 from the Local Authority constituency, six each from teachers’ and graduates’ constituencies while the rest 12 are nominated by the governor at the advice of the state government.
Of the total six teachers’ constituencies, three are going to polls on March 31.
Similarly, of the total six graduates’ constituencies, two are going to the polls on March 31.
