Google is making sure that all of its first-party apps are better supported on big-screen devices such as tablets and foldable phones. In line with this, Gmail is getting a new immersive and multitasking design for foldable phones such as the Galaxy Z Fold and others in the series.

In an official Google workspace blog, Google revealed that Gmail on Android is getting a new two-pane viewing mode. This two-pane Gmail layout is similar to what already exists on tablets. Prior to this update, Gmail used the phone UI and did not just stretch the entire UI to accommodate the foldable’s display. But now, it is actually practical and will enhance a better multi-tasking experience for users on a foldable phone.

Now, with the new Gmail two-pane mode, you will see the list of all your emails on the left, with the search bar above it. The ‘Compose’ button will also appear on the left pane. If you tap on the left, you will see the full message on the right pane, and you can also expand the message to the entirety of the foldable’s display. The ‘Material You bar’ is now placed at the bottom and stretches to both halves of the Gmail two-pane mode.

The expanded email in the new Gmail two-pane mode appears inside a light container, whereas everything else has a blue background. This is similar to the Material You design visible on Gmail for the web. Google and many third-party app developers have ported their apps to better suit foldable phones. However, popular apps such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook are yet to join the bandwagon.
