Nagaland, Meghalaya Elections 2023: Fifty-nine seats are polling in each state.

Assembly polls are being held in Meghalaya and Nagaland today amid tight security. In Meghalaya, the BJP is going it alone after a rift with Conrad Sangma's NPP and hopes to increase its tally.

Meghalaya will also see a multi-cornered contest, where besides the Congress, BJP and the NPP (National People's Party), Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress is in fray.

In Nagaland, triangular contests are on the cards in 59 of the 60 assembly constituencies. The BJP, which won 12 of the state's 60 seats in 2018, is contesting in alliance with the NDPP (Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party). Under the seat-sharing agreement, the NDPP is contesting on 40 seats and the BJP on 20 seats.

The counting of votes of the Assembly Election 2023 will be out on March 2.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that he is receiving "very positive" feedback from his team stationed at polling stations. "People are coming out in large numbers to vote, so we expect that this should be very positive for us. We expect the party will get much-much high numbers than what we had last time," he said.

Meghalaya Assembly Elections: Around 19,000 Personnel, Polling Staff Deployed On Duty
The Election Commission has stepped up security arrangements for controlling the law and order situation in the state. "11 Zonal magistrates, 73 sector magistrates and nearly 30 Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) companies have been deployed in the district for conducting the smooth election. Each polling team has four personnel. 30 CAPF companies have deployed in vulnerable and critical polling stations," the Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills district told ANI on Sunday.

One person has been killed and 13 others were injured as a bus carrying polling and security personnel fell from the hill into the jungle in the Wokha district, the Nagaland Police said. The driver of the bus has been killed, according to the police. The injured include eight personnel of the Jharkhand armed police and one of the Nagaland Armed police.

Nagaland Election: Polling For 60-Member Assembly
The stage is set for assembly polls in Nagaland, where over 13 lakh voters will decide the electoral fate of 183 candidates contesting in 59 out of a total of 60 seats on Monday.

The ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and the BJP are contesting the polls on a 40:20 seat-sharing basis. The Congress, which ruled the state till 2003 and does not have any member in the current House, has fielded 23 aspirants.

Polling will be held from 7 am to 4 pm, while counting of votes will be taken up on March 2.
