CHIKKAMAGALURU/HASSAN: Former CM and JD(S) second-in-command
HD Kumaraswamy, on Sunday cancelled a trip to Bengaluru where he was scheduled to meet with party functionaries to sort out the issue of candidates for Hassan district.
Appearing peeved, Kumaraswamy insisted that there was no change in his stand, and that he is still determined to nominate an “ordinary” party worker for Hassan city segment. “I will not allow emotional issues to overtake the political campaign which I launched two months ago,” Kumaraswamy said.
He indicated he has not discussed the issue with JD(S) supremo and former PM HD Deve Gowda, also his father, because he is concerned “for his health”. “Deve Gowda’s health is more important to me. I cannot control others who prioritise their feelings over Deve Gowda’s health. ”
Kumaraswamy’s sister-in-law Bhavani Revanna is keen on contesting from Hassan city seat and even publicly announced that the party had chosen to nominate her. However, in a move that suggested all is not well in the JD(S) first family, Kumaraswamy, barely a day later, insisted that no decision had been made on the candidate for Hassan seat.
Kumaraswamy is against fielding Bhavani, his brother HD Revanna’s wife, and is instead pitching for HP Swaroop, son of HS Prakash, former Hassan city MLA. He blamed “some party leaders” for what he called a “mess”. Sources suggest, Deve Gowda is likely to convene a meeting next week to decide on the candidate.
