PRAYAGRAJ: The Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh, the apex body of lawyers of state, on Sunday expressed resentment over the brutal killing of a lawyer Krishna Kumar Pal alias Umesh Pal and has demanded enforcement of Advocates' Protection Act in the state so that the life of lawyers can be protected in future.
In a letter to the chief minister Yogi Adityanath, president of Bar Council of UP Panchu Ram Maurya warned if adequate steps are not taken by the state government for protection of lawyers in the state, the Bar Council would be compelled to launch an agitation in this connection. The president of Bar Council has alleged that the killing of Umesh Pal showed negligent and lackadaisical attitude of administration and police department. "Of late, it is being noticed that murderous assaults are perpetrated on the lawyers in the state frequently but the police continue to remain a mute spectator. As a result the morale of culprits is getting higher. Consequently, the lawyers by and large are apprehensive while going from home to court and vice-versa," he added.
In this backdrop, the Bar Council of UP has demanded the chief minister to provide protection to the family members of those lawyers who were recently killed by criminals. Besides, a government job be provided to one member of the deceased along with compensation of Rs 20 lakh, added the president.
