No ban on onion exports, Commerce Ministry clarifies: USD 523 million exported during Apr-Dec 2022

Pakyong, 27 Feb: According to information provided by the commerce ministry, there is no restriction on the export of onions, and India has already transported more than USD 523.8 million worth of onions from April to December 2022. Onion seeds, however, cannot be exported.

The ministry issued a statement saying, “Government has not restricted or forbidden the export of onions.” The Commerce Ministry released a reply in response to NCP leader Supriya Sule’s tweet on onion exports dated February 25.

Exports of onions rose by nearly 50% to USD 52.1 million in December 2022.

From April through December of this fiscal year, exports increased by 16.3% to USD 523.8 million.

Piyush Goyal, the minister of trade and industry, emphasized in a tweet on Saturday that exporting onions from India to any country is not prohibited and that false claims to the contrary are bad.
