PUNE: The Kondhwa police on Sunday arrested a man (40) and his wife (35) on the charge of strangling a 34-year-old woman to death on Friday morning. The couple also attempted to pass off the killing as a suicide. An advance postmortem report by the Sassoon General Hospital called their bluff, as the doctors concluded that the victim was first strangled and then hanged.
Inspector Sanjay Mogale of Kondhwa police told TOI, "The arrested man, who undertakes odd jobs for a living, had an extra-marital affair with the victim, a housewife, and his wife knew about the same. The affair turned sour after the victim started repeatedly asking the man to leave his wife and start living with her. The victim was staying in a tin-shed room at Shivnerinagar and the couple, who have a daughter and a son, stay in an adjacent room."
The victim had left her husband and two children to stay with the man. According to the police, initially, the man's wife did not react to her husband's affair with the victim. However, when the latter's demands kept increasing it disturbed the married life of the couple.
"The couple then colluded and decided to get rid of the woman. Sometime between 6am and 8.30am on Friday, they strangled her to death and then hung her body from the ceiling, to create a scene of her having committed suicide. However, the post-mortem report revealed that the woman was strangled to death and then hanged. The report also revealed that the couple had beaten her up before killing her," Mogale added.
