Panaji: Students of Class VII to X from schools across Goa will participate in the Earth Hour Quiz, that will be organised by WWF India in collaboration with Goa Science Centre and Planetarium, Miramar during the Centre’s Science Fiesta event.
The ‘Earth Hour Quiz’ will be held on February 27 and aims to provide students with a platform to showcase their knowledge of the environment and wildlife. This state-level quiz will be a pre-activity for Earth Hour, which is a worldwide movement organised by World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
Earth Hour is known for the symbolic ‘lights off’ moment to show collective support for the planet.
“Since 2007, Earth Hour has shone a spotlight on the issues of climate change and nature loss. But 2023 must be a year of change in order to reach our 2030 nature-positive goal. We need more people, more than ever to join in with Earth Hour. The main objective of this quiz is to create awareness on climate change and nature loss among school students,” said Gautami Manakikar, programme officer (Marine Conservation), WWF India-Goa Office.
A total of 24 schools participated in the preliminary elimination round held on February 20 at Goa Science Centre and only the top four teams will qualify for the final round on February 27, said Manakikar.
“The finals will comprise four rounds — multiple choice, audio-visual round, buzzer round and rapid-fire round. The winners of this quiz competition will be awarded certificates along with merchandise from WWF-India,” she said.
G Srinivasa, group director, National Remote Sensing Centre, ISRO, Hyderabad will be present as the chief guest for the valedictory event and prize distribution, which will be held on February 28 at Goa Science Centre.
“On March 25 at 8.30pm, we expect everyone to join us, for 60 minutes and give an hour for Earth. As landmarks and homes across the planet switch off, we want everyone to take a break from their routine and everyday distractions and spend 60 minutes doing something positive for our planet,” WWF Goa has said in its appeal.
