Hubballi: Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) has intensified its mass cleanliness campaign in all wards to keep the twin cities clean and aesthetically pleasing.
A mass cleanliness campaign was conducted earlier, but it was not effective. However, the drive has intensified in the last few months. HDMC commissioner has given strict instructions to all zonal assistant commissioners to carry out cleanliness drives in at least one ward of the city every day. Therefore, the campaign is effective in almost all wards led by zonal officers.
Every ward is regularly cleaned by civic workers but it cannot cover all the areas in the ward every day. Efforts are being made to clean the entire ward through mass cleaning campaigns in each zone. Local and emergency management civil servants are being used to accomplish this. This can tidy up an area or market that has been neglected in terms of cleanliness, said HDMC Zonal Assistant Commissioner Basavaraj Lamani to STOI.
He said public cooperation is imperative to make a city clean and aesthetically pleasing. People should stop throwing garbage on the streets of the city and spitting everywhere. Civil servants strive to maintain the cleanliness of each ward. The citizens of the respective ward should cooperate with the administrative system to maintain cleanliness, he said.
HDMC Commissioner Gopal Krishna said the cleaning work is being carried out with a team of around 40 to 50 civic workers under the leadership of the commissioner of all the zonal offices of the municipal corporation. The drive is being conducted by the zonal assistant commissioner of that ward. It is impossible to clean an entire ward at once. All the wards of the city are being cleaned gradually through a mass cleaning campaign, he added. He said that actions will be taken to maintain cleanliness in all the wards under the mass cleanliness campaign. Cleaning work is being done using emergency workers if necessary. There is a positive response from the general public, he said.
