GURGAON: A Panipat court awarded seven years of rigorous imprisonment to a man, two years imprisonment to two others and sent a minor to a juvenile home for two years for attacking a policeman in February 2021.
At 9.40pm on February 15, 2021, home guard Mohit, who was posted at the Kishanpura police post in Panipat received information from the police control room that a fight had broken out between neighbours in Ravidas Nagar. A police team then reached the spot. While they were enquiring about the incident, one of the convicts, Gulab, reached the spot with his sons Rahul, Sachin and their 17-year-old friend. Sachin was carrying a knife and the remaining three were armed with sticks.
Public prosecutor Arvind Sharma said the four people started hurling abuses at the cops and threatened to “teach them a lesson” for supporting their neighbours.
“They then attacked the police team. Sachin stabbed the home guard in the neck. When a crowd gathered, they fled,” added Sharma.
The injured cop was rushed to hospital and a case was registered against the four under IPC sections 186, 333, 353, 507, 34 and 506. In the next couple of weeks, all four were caught.
Session judge Sudesh Kumar Sharma in an order on February 22, observed: “The object of punishment is not only to punish the wrongdoer that he should not commit such offence in future, but also to strike a warning for others who intend to take the law in their hands. Further, justice demands that courts impose punishment befitting the crime so that they may reflect public abhorrence of the crime.”
Sachin was awarded seven years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 30,000 was imposed upon him. Gulab and Rahul were awarded two years’ jail with a fine of Rs 15,000. The minor was sent to a juvenile home and a fine of Rs 15,000 was imposed upon him too.
