Elderly woman assaulted by son under influence of alcohol

Thiruvananthapuram: A 78-year-old woman was brutally assaulted by her son under the influence of alcohol at Mambazhathara near Neyyattinkara on Friday.
Santhakumari of Mullakkadu Puthanveedu at Perumpazhuthoor was gravely assaulted by her son Rajesh alias Sreejith (44). The incident came to light after a woman, who lives near their house, shot a video of the assault and shared it on social media. The video went viral in minutes and the police registered a suo moto case against the son.
In the video, Divya, who shot the video, can be heard asking Rajesh why he was assaulting his mother. Replying to it, Rajesh can be heard asking her to take care of his mother if she wants to protect her from attack.
Divya said Rajesh always assault Santhakumari under the influence of alcohol; various people in the panchayat have tried to intervene in the issue earlier also, but he never listens to anyone. In the meantime, panchayat authorities have started measures to lodge Santhakumari at a safe place to avoid such incidents in the future.
After the video went viral, Neyyattinkara police went to the house to take Rajesh into custody. But the mother threatened to commit suicide, if her son is taken into custody. She told the police that there was no one else to take care of her. Due to this, the police went back without arresting him, but registered a case under sections of IPC 324 for voluntarily causing hurt, 294-b for abusing and also under Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act-2007.
