BENGALURU: In the war of words between Karnataka chief minister Basavaraj Bommai and opposition leader Siddaramaiah over the Arkavathy layout denotification scam, the former on Saturday hinted that the state government will be initiating an inquiry into the alleged Rs 8,000 crore scam.
Having disclosed the conclusionary portion of the Justice Kempanna commission report on the Arkavathy layout denotification scam, CM Bommai on Friday was targeted by Siddaramaiah for trying to "selectively" twist the truth and blame him for the entire scam.
However, on Saturday morning, CM Bommai hit back and said: "Siddaramaiah is lying (about not being involved in the denotification). When he says that he only approved what the officials brought to his notice, what does it mean? It is an admission of wrongdoing and there is no need for bigger evidence than this."
Bommai defended his attack on the floor of the assembly against Siddaramaiah and Congress government's "wrongdoing" in the Arkavathy Layout denotification by claiming that the statements made by him were not his findings but that of the Justice Kempanna commission.
"It is the findings of the same commission which was set up by the Siddaramaiah government and not Basavaraj Bommai’s. I read the findings of the commission who dwelt into the entire scam by collating thousands of pages of documents. So there is no question of me lying, and it is he (Siddaramaiah) who is lying," he alleged.
When questioned on whether the state government will launch an investigation into the scam now, Bommai stopped short of saying it but adequately hinted at it.
"We have already seen what action has been taken by the Congress government. Now, we will initiate appropriate action. What does appropriate action mean, you know it very well," he said.
The Arkavathy layout scam inquiry report has opened the floodgates of charges of
corruption against the Congress, with the BJP using it as a tool to counter the opposition claims of a 40 per cent corruption government.
The scam relates to 852 acres of "re-do" or denotification ordered by the previous Congress regime that is estimated to be Rs 8,000 crore in land value.
