Meghalaya’s border with Bangladesh & Assam to be sealed: EC
GUWAHATI: The Election Commission on Friday ordered sealing of Meghalaya’s international border with Bangladesh and its inter-state border with Assam till the day of counting of votes, which is on March 2.
Meghalaya shares a 445-km border with Bangladesh and about 885 km with Assam.
These preventive measures have been taken to ensure free and fair election to the 60-member assembly in the state, which will be held on Monday.
State’s chief electoral officer FR Kharkong said, “All districts having the international border with Bangladesh have been asked to issue orders to seal and movement of people in the border areas would be restricted.”
Subsequently, the deputy commissioner of East Khasi Hills district in his order stated that if unregulated movement between India and Bangladesh is allowed, there is likelihood of law and order problems leading to danger to human life, safety and disturbance to public tranquility.
The district administration has also banned movement of people within one km radius of the Indo-Bangladesh border in East Khasi Hills district till March 2.
