Amit KumarKARNAL: The Panipat police have arrested five persons in connection with a suspected honour killing in the city on February 20.
The police claimed to have recovered four country-made pistols, 20 live cartridges, two empty cartridges and a car from the possession of the accused.
The arrested accused have been identified as Surender, cousin of victim’s wife, Rajesh, Shyam Sunder, Anil and Rinku.
The police claimed that the accused have confessed to murdering Banti (27), a resident of Babail village, who was residing in a rented accommodation in a locality in Panipat.
Panipat SP Shashank Kumar Sawan said that the accused were arrested from Samalkha on Friday evening.
He said that Banti and the girl belonged to the same village and they got married around three years ago. Surender was not happy with their marriage and he was bearing a grudge against Banti since then.
"Surender had hatched a conspiracy to kill Banti and he brought the weapons and cartridges from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar around three months ago. On February 20, Rajesh, Shyam Sunder, Anil and Rinku came on two bikes and they shot Banti when he was working on his vegetable stall near Ansal city in Panipat. He was taken to a trauma centre, where he was declared dead," the SP said.
As per the police, Rinku has a criminal record as he had been sentenced to 20 years' jail in murder case registered at Madhuban police station in 2012. In 2018, he walked out on bail, he added.
Sawan said that the accused were produced before the court which sent Rajesh and Shyam Sunder to judicial custody and Surender, Rinku and Anil to three-day police remand.
