PUNE: A woman (36) was arrested on Friday on the charge of bludgeoning her live-in partner's five-year-old daughter to death.
The woman took the girl to a nearby hospital after she fell unconscious on Thursday afternoon and claimed that she had fainted following an epilepsy attack. The hospital alerted the police after finding that the girl was dead.
"We became suspicious after noticing burn marks on the girl's body and took the woman into custody. During the questioning, she admitted that she had bludgeoned the girl," senior inspector Sunil Jaitapurkar of the Uttamnagar police said.
He said the woman and the girl's father had met through a matrimonial website. "He wanted to marry a woman, who would take care of his daughter after her mother's death. The woman's husband, too, had died a few years ago," he said.
He said the duo decided to get married and shifted to Shivane. They were currently in a live-in relationship. "The victim's father works in a private company in Warje Malwadi," Jaitapurkar said.
"For the last three days, she was beating up the victim. She had inflicted burns on the girl's body. On Thursday, the woman attacked her with some hard object. She could not sustain it and died," Jaitapurkar said.
He said the woman has been arrested under sections 302 (murder) and 182 of the Indian Penal Code.
