St. Clair's Cristian Haslem is seen during a wrestling match this season. He was voted Blue Water Area Athlete of the Week on Thursday.

Earlier this season, the St. Clair wrestling team clinched its first conference championship since 2019.

But the Saints' accomplishments didn't end there. Just look at Cristian Haslem.

The freshman was voted Blue Water Area Athlete of the Week on Thursday for the week of Feb. 13-18. Haslem won the Division 2, Region 5 individual championship at 106 pounds on Feb. 18. He defeated Izaak Kulkulski of Bay City John Glenn by an 8-7 decision in the first-place match.

The Times Herald recently caught with Haslem to learn more about him.

Times Herald: How long have you been wrestling?

Cristian Haslem: I've been wrestling since I was 7 years old and I started with the Marysville youth wrestling club.

TH: What makes you such a talented wrestler?

Haslem: I definitely have to say my coaches pushing me and my teammates being there to push me as well. But also my parents for bringing me to every practice. That makes it so much easier to get everywhere.

TH: Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Haslem: I'd have to say my brother, Cam Haslem. He works really hard and he's always been fun to watch. He gives it his all on the mat.

TH: What do you enjoy doing outside of wrestling?

Haslem: I like to go to downtown St. Clair with my friends. I also like to longboard and go swimming.

TH: What's been your favorite part of the season so far?

Haslem: I'd have to say the MAC (Blue) championship match against Marysville. Because the atmosphere was really cool winning it with the team.
