Delhi High Court puts MCD panel poll on hold
The matter was heard by Justice Gaurang Kanth who observed that the notice was given without a declaration of the results of the earlier elections conducted on February 24.

After the high-voltage drama between the Aam Aadmi Party and Bharatiya Janata Party in the House on Friday, the Delhi High Court on February 25 put a hold on the re-election of the six members of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
The notice was issued on a petition filed by two BJP councillors Shikha Roy and Kanwaljeet Sehrawat against the notice to conduct the re-election on February 27. The matter was heard by Justice Gaurang Kanth who observed that the notice was given without a declaration of the results of the earlier elections conducted on February 24.
The bench, in its order, said no purpose will be served by conducting a fresh election. Accepting the argument raised in the petition which argued that the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act does not allow the Mayor to stop the results of the election from being declared, even though the Mayor acts as the returning officer, the court said it is nowhere seen that Mayor has authority to declare an election of the standing committee as null and void.
The Delhi High Court also directed that all ballot papers, CCTV footage of the election and the House proceedings and all other related material will be kept preserved for 3 months by the Municipal Secretary and the Mayor.
On Friday, a clash broke out between AAP and BJP’s councillors in Delhi Civic Centre on the third day of commotion in the House. The video of the ruckus circulated on social media wherein the councillors were seen manhandling and punching each other. Moreover, one councillor collapsed amid the chaos.
