COIMBATORE: The city is set to get an interactive science centre named ‘Experimenta’, which will stimulate curiosity of children in a range of science concepts and let them learn science in a practical and fun-filled manner. The centre is set up by GD Naidu Charities in the same complex on the Avinashi Road, where GD Science Museum and Gedee Car Museum are housed.
The centre will be inaugurated on February 28 by finance and human resources minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan. The science centre is set up over a space of 40,000 square feet with modern amenities with more than 120 interactive science exhibits.
GD Gopal, managing trustee of GD Naidu Charities, said, “Experimenta aims at offering students a playful approach to science and technology, with specially designed, hands- on exhibits which promotes a nurturing educational experience overall.”
The centre has well-curated write-ups and information boards to explain the science behind each exhibit and a team of science communicators to assist children and the public to explore Experimenta effectively, he said.
The exhibits are available on various concepts such as motion, sound, illusion, optics, maths, nature, mechanics, power, light and colours.
“We have guided tours available for school groups to ensure that general visitors get sufficient time to explore and experience each exhibit. The exhibits are spread in such a manner that group activities on certain exhibits are also possible to inculcate teamwork,” said Akila Shanmugam, trustee of GD Naidu Charities.
The science centre has various laboratories such as maker's space, activity labs, physics lab and robotics lab.
Entry tickets have been priced at Rs 125 for children and Rs 250 for adults. Only Rs 500 will be collected for a group of government school students consisting of 30 to 40 children, Akila Shamugam said.
