3 teens shot at funeral reception in St. Paul for Harding High School homicide victim, police say

Three teens were shot at a funeral reception Friday night in St. Paul for the 15-year-old student fatally stabbed at a St. Paul high school, according to police and the Ramsey County sheriff.

Officers were called to the Wellstone Center on the West Side at 7:42 p.m. on a report of a shooting with multiple victims. They found three juvenile males with gunshot injuries to their lower extremities, said Sgt. Mike Ernster, a St. Paul police spokesman.

Paramedics took them to Regions Hospital with injuries that appeared to be non-life-threatening, Ernster said.

Based on preliminary information, police said a white sedan drove by the Wellstone Center, which also houses the El Rio Vista Recreation Center, at Robie and State streets. Someone from that vehicle fired shots into the building. A post-funeral reception for Devin Denelle Edward Scott was being held in the building.

Scott’s funeral and burial were earlier Friday. He was killed at Harding High School on Feb. 10 and a 16-year-old student is charged with murder.

The teens shot Friday night are 14- to 17-years-old, according to Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher.

Shortly after the shootings, a white sedan and another vehicle collided in the 400 block of Clinton Avenue, Ernster said. Two males ran and officers searched for them, but didn’t find anyone. Police are investigating whether the sedan was the one from the shooting.

Injuries weren’t reported from the occupants of the other vehicle in the crash.

Officers who responded to the shooting stopped a 16-year-old male as he was running from the area. Police found he had a handgun with a switch, which allows a gun to be fired as an automatic weapon, and an extended magazine, Ernster said.

Police took the teen into custody and are investigating what role, if any, he had in the shooting.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the shooting and ask anyone with information to call them at 651-266-5650.

Fletcher later spoke about the shooting at the start of his “Live on Patrol” web broadcast Friday night.

He said sheriff’s cars were present during the day “because we’re worried about some rival groups coming over and causing chaos.”

“Thankfully no one was killed, but three injured is about as serious as you can get,” Fletcher said.
