KOLHAPUR: As many as 12 indigenous cows have died at the Goshala of Kaneri Mutt of Kolhapur in the last two days allegedly after consuming leftover food.
On Thursday, three cows were found dead and nine more died on Friday morning. Over 20 cows are ailing and under treatment, claimed the veterinarians of the animal husbandry department. The vets said the cows are out of danger. "The cause of death can be known only after the post-mortem report comes in," said Y A Pathan, district deputy commissioner of the department. He, however, said the "primary reason is that the cows were fed the leftover chapatis."
Pathan said the leftover food is not meant to be given to the cows and buffaloes. "Eating leftover food causes indigestion. It leads to acidosis, meaning high amount of acid in the body, which leads to death. We have managed to pull most of the ailing cows out of danger. The cows are from the Goshala run by the Mutt," said Pathan.
The Panchmahaboot Mohotsav, the festival of five elements of the life, has been organised by Kaneri Mutt. Chief minister Eknath Shinde and deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the event. The organisers had claimed that over three to five lakh people will be visiting the festival each day between February 21 to 27. Large number of the followers of the Mutt are donating prepared food to be served for the visitors. However, food is left in large quantity. The mutt is run by Kadsidheshwar Swami. The office of Swami has issued a statement stating that death happened due to ignorance.
