Indian-origin Fijians are keeping Hindi alive in Fiji

Fiji is the only country, apart from India, where Hindi is recognised as an official language. The language was brought to Fiji over 150 years ago by indentured laborers from India, who mainly spoke Awadhi and Bhojpuri. Today, Hindi is strongly associated with the Indian-origin population in Fiji, who are determined to preserve and promote the language for generations to come.
