Authorities in Ventura arrested a Santa Paula man Wednesday in connection with Sunday's fatal shooting in east Ventura.

Also Wednesday, the victim was identified as Joe Ramirez, 25, of Ventura, according to the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office. Ramirez died of a gunshot wound to the chest, the medical examiner found. The manner of death was deemed homicide.

Ramirez was shot around 12:45 a.m. Sunday in the 11000 block of Mimosa Street, the Ventura Police Department reported. The area is in an enclave on the north side of Highway 126, east of Wells Road.

Police previously said there had apparently been an altercation in the front yard of a home before the shooting.

On Wednesday, Ventura officers served a search warrant in Santa Paula in the 700 block of West Santa Paula Street.

There, they arrested the suspect, Jose Emanuel Posadas, 21, on suspicion of murder. He remained in county jail Thursday morning with bail set at $500,000.

Posadas had not been formally charged by the Ventura County District Attorney's Office as of Thursday morning, online court records showed. He was slated for an initial hearing Friday afternoon in Ventura County Superior Court.

No other suspects are outstanding, police Cmdr. Edward Caliento said Wednesday night.

Officials previously said they believe the suspect and victim knew each other and it appeared the shooter only fired once.

No additional details were immediately available, including what type of gun was involved.

Sunday's fatality is Ventura's first homicide in 2023 and the second criminal homicide reported in the county this year. On Friday, a Newbury Park man, 33, was arrested on suspicion of fatally shooting his sister.

Ventura police are continuing to investigate Sunday's shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call Cpl. Gil Pusen at 805-339-4463.
