Salt could play key role in energy transition: Study

A basic element, salt, could play a significant role in the energy transition to lower-carbon energy sources, according to a new study sponsored by the Bureau of Economic Geology at The University of Texas at Austin. The paper explains how massive subsurface salt deposits could be used as hydrogen storage tanks, to transfer heat to geothermal facilities, and to impact CO2 storage. It also demonstrates how businesses with current salt expertise, such as solution mining, salt mining, and oil and gas exploration, may assist. The study was published in the journal Tektonika.
