PATNA: Operation theatres are all about panic, tension and anxiety, but a video of a septuagenarian man, singing an all-time hit of Md Rafi on the operating table at a government hospital in Siwan district, is winning hearts online.
On Wednesday, 70-year-old Kripal Prasad, a resident of Sadar block in Siwan district, had been granted time for cataract surgery by his doctors at the local Sadar hospital. However, he appeared a bit nervous once he entered the operation theatre by frequently asking "Dard to na hoi (wouldn't it be painful)?"
Seeing his nervousness and panic on his face, Dr MA Akbar, who was to perform the surgery kept the patient engaged in some discussions, asking about famous singers of his time and popular songs that he loves to sing in a bid to calm down his tension.
Lying on the operation table, the patient subsequently starts singing the popular Hindi song, "Baharon phool barsao, mera Mehboob aaya hai..." - a super hit romantic number from Hindi movie "Suraj" picturised on Rajendra Kumar and Vyjayanthimala. However, by the time he finished the song, his surgery was over.In the video, the patient is seen lying on the operation table and singing the song in a melodious voice as the eye surgeon completes the surgery. "The patient was pleasantly surprised when I told him to go home saying that the surgery was over," Dr Akbar, who operated upon the patient told the TOI on Thursday, adding that he had a good understanding of golden era songs and the popular singers of those times.
Dr Akbar said government hospitals in the state had been given the target of performing one lakh cataract surgeries in the current month and they plan to conduct at least 1,000 in Siwan district alone. Dr Akbar, who hails from Chennai, has been posted at Siwan hospital for the past two years.
