Thiruvananthapuram: Education minister V Sivankutty said the Centre’s decision to make six years as the minimum age for admission in Class I will be discussed in the state. The state is yet to receive any direction on this, he said.
Presently, the minimum age fixed by the state government for Class I admission is five years. However, the Centre’s new proposal cannot be disowned. Hence the state government would convene a discussion with all the concerned and seek their opinion, said the minister.
“The state government is waiting for the official communication from the Centre. Before implementing it, the situation in Kerala will also have to be analysed. It is a social issue, and hence the government will have to discuss it with all the sections of society,” said Sivankutty.
The Centre had directed all states and Union territories to fix the minimum age for admission to Class I at six years. The Union
ministry of education asked all states to align their age to admission in schools with that of the National Education Policy 2020.
