Southeast Texans can celebrate the Lenten Season during a local pilgrimage.
The 11th annual Lenten Pilgrimage will take place March 4 in Port Arthur with a traditional Latin mass, the Most Holy Rosary, the Way of the Cross,
spiritual talks and Catholic history, according to a news release.
“Each year’s pilgrimage keeps growing and growing,” Pilgrimage Co-Chair Marilyn Morrell said in the release. "I think that is a reflection of the need to turn to God amidst today’s turmoil in the world. So, rain or shine we walk, pray, and immerse ourselves in centuries’ of traditions of the faithful during the Holy Season of Lent.”
The mass will kick off at 9:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, located 3648 S Sgt. Lucian Adams Blvd. (61st Street) in Port Arthur. There will be time for confessions starting at 8:25 a.m.
After mass, the group will make its way to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, Calvary Catholic Cemetery and St. James Catholic Church, then end the journey around 3:15 p.m. at the Queen of Peace Shrine, located at 800 Ninth Ave. in Port Arthur.
"Plenty of bathroom stops and a 15 passenger van will provide comfort for those in need," the release states. "Those who prefer to drive their car in the rear of walkers are also welcome."
Parking is available at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Hall and at Queen of Peace Shrine in time to use shuttle to Our Lady of GuadalupeC hurch leaving at 8:00 a.m.
Bread, water and a fried fish snack will be provided by Bridge City Knights of Columbus Sacred Heart Council from St. Henry Catholic Church, according to the release.
“Pilgrims should wear walking shoes, modest attire (no shorts, tank tops, sleeveless tops),” Morrell said in the release. “Don't forget your rosary and a flower for Mary. Entire families, baby strollers, religious banners welcomed.”
