GURGAON: A 37-year-old cab driver was allegedly shot by three bike-borne assailants in front of his house in Saraswati Enclave late on Tuesday night. Police have arrested one of the accused, while raids are being conducted to nab the others, officers said.
The victim, Rahul Solanki, was originally from Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh. He lived with his family in a rented accommodation in G-block of Saraswati Enclave. Rahul had been jailed for the murder of an ambulance driver over a decade ago and was out on bail, police said. The arrested man has been identified as Deepak Raghav (20), an acquaintance. The assailants were on a motorcycle and had been waiting for Rahul to arrive, police said.
After the murder, gangster Ritik Boxer, a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, claimed responsibility for the crime in a post on social media. Cops said they are probing the gang war angle in the case.
According to police, the murder took place around 9.45pm on Tuesday. Rahul reached home and parked his cab in front of his house. He had just stepped out of the car when the three bike-borne men approached him and opened fire.
After hearing the gunshots, his family rushed out and tried to stop the shooters, but they managed to flee on the bike. Rahul's family informed police, and a team soon reached the spot and took the critically injured man to hospital. At the hospital, doctors declared him brought dead. The body was then taken to the mortuary for a postmortem.
Ritik posted an update on Facebook tagging gangster Goldy Brar late on Tuesday night. "Our men killed Rahul Solanki. Those supporting Kaushal, Bawania and Bambia (rival gangsters) will meet the same fate. The liquor vends of Rewari and Gurgaon are ours. Anyone planning to apply for them, think twice," the post read.
An FIR was lodged at Sector 10A police station in the early hours of Wednesday after Rahul's wife Neetu filed a police complaint. "Three men shot my husband. When I rushed outside, I saw them continuously firing bullets on my husband. He was shot over 10 times and fell on the street. When I shouted for help, the accused fled on their bike and my sister informed police," she said.
The FIR was registered against the men under sections 302 (murder), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC and relevant sections of the Arms Act.
Meanwhile, ACP (crime) Preet Pal Singh Sangwan said they are investigating the case. "We are verifying if any gang is involved. Deepak was arrested within a few hours of the murder. During interrogation, he revealed that Rahul was allegedly involved in the murder of his friend's father in 2012. So, Deepak and his friends conspired to kill him. We will take him on police remand to know more details. Raids are being conducted to nab the others," ACP Sangwan said.
