GUWAHATI: A 24-year-old man, in an inebriated state, beheaded his friend with a machete after a heated argument in Jorhat on Monday night, police said.
Police said the accused identified as Lohit Gogoi, who works as a driver and a drug addict, and the victim identified as Ratul Saura alias Fai (21) were drinking together in the former’s house at Lahdoigarh, around 15 km from Jorhat town, on Monday night.
“According to Lohit’s confession, there was an argument between them and after some time, Lohit got angry and severed the head of his friend. He then put the severed head in a school bag and left for the police station on a bicycle,” a police officer said. The outpost is located around 2 km from his house.
Meanwhile, Lohit’s mother and sister, who met him with the severed head while he was going to the police outpost, immediately called the police and informed them about the incident. His mother and sister were not at home at the time of the incident.
“The police team met him a few hundred metres from the police outpost. Apart from the severed head, police found the machete he had used to behead his friend,” the police officer said.
Police arrested Lohit on Wednesday and took him to the crime spot to recreate the scene on Wednesday evening. He will be produced before a local court on Thursday.
In another incident, police in Guwahati on Tuesday recovered the body of a 37-year-old man, Gautam Gohain, from the backyard of his house at Noonmati with injury marks inflicted by a sharp weapon in the back of his head. He had been missing since Friday.
Police found his last mobile phone location at Chandrapur, which is around 17 km from his residence.
An investigation is under way to catch the culprits, the police said.
