Inter-caste teen lovers end lives as kin oppose affair in Kolkata

KOLKATA: A relationship between a 19-year-old youth and a 16-year-old girl ended in twin suicides at Agarpara on Wednesday. The duo had run away as their parents allegedly opposed their inter-caste relationship, said police.
Ankit Bharti and Anjali Kumari, who hailed from Bihar, were found hanging in the flat they had rented. "We suspect the duo had died by suicide as their families rejected their relationship," said a senior officer from the Barrackpore commissionerate.
"Ankit's parents had said they would not allow an inter-caste marriage," said a relative of Ankit. But Ankit still went to Anjali's place, saying he would marry her; her family reportedly said they were not old enough. The two recently ran away and rented a flat at Agarpara. "They rented the place barely two weeks ago," said Dilip Srivastava, the landlord.
