Ludhiana: The department of animal husbandry on Monday stopped illegal bullock cart races at two different places in the district. According to animal rights activists, two illegal bullock cart races were to be conducted — one at Dhamot village in Payal and other at Qila Raipur area of Dehlon — on Monday. They said the information was forwarded to the district administration.
Deputy director, animal husbandry, Paramdeep Singh Walia said both the races were stopped before they could kick off. Even as no warning was given to organisers, they were told not to hold such races in future.
Animal rights activist Suman Virwani from Delhi said, “In violation of Supreme Court directions, such races are rampant in Punjab these days.”
She said the departments concerned should be organising awareness programme on animal laws and court orders.
She said the officer concerned in the district told her that fresh letters will be issued to departments including police to keep a check over such violations and make people aware about animal laws. The animal rights activist said it was important to educate and create awareness among people so that crime against animals don’t happen.
