Missing non-verbal boy who left his Oakham home found walking through forest with his dog
A non-verbal boy who was reported missing after leaving his Oakham home with his dog on Monday morning has been found safe, officials said.
The family had just returned from the store and fortunately, 5-year-old Owen was still wearing his warm jacket. “Andrew was loading food into the freezer and the little sister said, ‘he’s gone. He’s gone outside,’” said Ellie Goderre, Owen’s grandmother.
Troopers and Oakham police officers launched a massive search for Owen Goderre after he wandered away from home with the family dog, Tika, according to Massachusetts State Police.
Owen and his dog were found shortly before 1 p.m. walking along a path of power lines that cut through a forest in the town, state police said. He had walked about two and a half miles through the woods before coming to a road. Goderre has since been reunited with his parents and was not injured.
“Tika is getting a nice bone tonight maybe has a steak dinner tonight,” said Goderre.
Goderre said Owen doesn’t have any scratches on him and is oblivious to everything that went on today. She said the family is now considering putting a tracking device on him.
“We appreciate the work of Oakham Police and Fire Departments and all of the Massachusetts State Police assets to bring Owen home safely,” Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early said. “Their coordinated efforts helped quickly locate Owen and his dog and reunite him with his family.”
