In the year 1999 in Australia Of an Age centres on Kol (Elias Anton), an 18-year-old aspiring ballroom dancer who was born in Serbia and has his entire life ahead of him. On the morning of their last competition, when Kol's companion and dancing partner Ebony (Hattie Hook) finds herself in another town, Kol phones Ebony's older brother Adam (Thom Green) for assistance. Kol and Adam start to get along while driving, and their connection develops with an intensity Kol initially doesn't seem ready for, but which will change his life.

In addition to being romantically intimate, Of an Age is Kol's coming-of-age tale as he attempts to comprehend who he is as a queer man and struggles to find his place in both the world and in his relationships. With simply two people driving and getting to know one another, the first half of the movie has the feel of a road trip movie. After a while, it becomes clear that Kol and Adam are attracted to one another and that there is a connection and sexual tension that keeps their dialogue continuing. Importantly, Adam is one of the few characters in the movie that is genuinely sympathetic to Kol, who is the target of derogatory remarks.

The rest of the movie more than makes up for Of an Age's plodding beginning and abrupt ending. Even though they are sharing a little area in the front seat of a car, the characters feel closer thanks to the movie's use of close-ups and boxed-in ratios. Kol's relationship with his family isn't explored in depth in the movie, but there is enough material provided for viewers to understand why Kol feels so alone. Of an Age also addresses the difficulties associated with growing up as a Serbian immigrant in australia, where finding acceptance among classmates seems even more pointless and people are sometimes nasty. With all of that woven into the story, it is simple to understand Kol's attraction to Adam.
