Springfield Police have identified a 44-year-old man who shot at several officers in a nearly six-hour standoff in the 700 block of South English Avenue that ended early Sunday morning.

Clayton A. Brewer of Springfield was arrested on two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm at a police officer, armed habitual criminal, armed violence and aggravated assault/discharge of a firearm/vehicle.

Brewer was booked into the Sangamon County Jail on $1 million bond after being interviewed at SPD headquarters, said Commander Sara Pickford.

Brewer fired at an SPD officer who initially responded to the home for a call for a person with a firearm at 7:06 p.m. Saturday.

Pickford said the officer saw Brewer in the back of the residence and identified himself at which time Brewer fired at the officer.

The officer was able to reach cover and was not injured.

Brewer fired two additional times at officers who were in close proximity to the residence. One round struck a police rescue vehicle, or BearCat, Pickford said.

Emergency and Crisis Response teams responded to the scene. The Crisis Response Team established communication with Brewer, who refused to leave the residence.

Members of Brewer's family also were talking to him during the standoff.

Police eventually deployed canisters of CS tear gas, an irritant, into the house which eventually coaxed Brewer out.

A woman was inside the home during the incident. Pickford did not identify her because she is not under arrest.

Pickford said Saturday she didn't know the woman's relationship to Brewer, but it wasn't a hostage situation.

Police recovered a .38 revolver and about three grams of suspected crack cocaine from the scene.

Officers from Illinois State Police, Sangamon County Sheriff's deputies and Leland Grove Police set up a perimeter around the area, blocking off a two-block area of English Avenue and parts of Lawrence Avenue, MacArthur Boulevard and Edwards Street.

Elizabeth Hoag, who lives in the 600 block of South English Avenue, said she was "a bit frustrated" because she had to find out what was on "through social media a couple of hours after the fact."

Hoag said her husband, who had gone to get food, wasn't allowed back inside the perimeter for 90 minutes.

She did not know Brewer and despite the incident, said she feels safe in the neighborhood.

"We've lived a couple of places in Springfield," Hoag said. "All those places felt safe, here especially."
