President Droupadi Murmu’s Wellington flight cancelled due to misty conditions
UDHAGAMANDALAM: President Droupadi Murmu’s visit to the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) at Wellington in Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu was cancelled on Sunday due to misty conditions. She was to board an IAF chopper from Coimbatore to land at the helipad at DSSC.
As per the schedule, the President was to reach Wellington around 10am to address officers and personnel of the college, and the Madras Regimental Centre. According to defence sources, the mist prevailing in the area led to the visit being called off. The President left for Delhi from Coimbatore later in the day.
The first Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife and 12 defence personnel were killed when their helicopter, flying from Coimbatore to Wellington, crashed into the hillside in misty conditions on December 8, 2021. A government probe had concluded that the clouds caused “spatial disorientation” of the pilot.
