CHENNAI: A 28-year-old man died when he lost control of his scooter and crashed into a median while trying to save his newly adopted pet dog from falling off the vehicle near Ambattur on Saturday night.
Police said autorickshaw driver K Deepan had kept his puppy, which he was taking home for his two children, on the floorboards in front of him. When he was riding on the Red Hills road near Kallikuppam, he noticed the puppy was slipping off the vehicle.
Deepan bent down and scooped up the puppy but lost control of his two-wheeler, which rammed into the road median, police said quoting onlookers. The puppy ran away from the scene while people gathered to help Deepan. He was taken to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Police said Deepan, a resident of Kavangarai near Ambattur, is survived by his wife Bhavani, 24, and two children. He had visited a relative at nearby Oragadam, where he spotted the puppy. He decided to take it home as his children were fond of dogs.
Red Hills Traffic Investigation Wing have registered a case of self-fall and further probe is on.
